The Method We Use - Functional Patterns
Functional Patterns (FP) is an innovative movement methodology. It focuses on correcting posture, gait, and movement patterns to achieve pain-free movement and optimal physical performance.
Functional Patterns knows that we should train the human body according to its natural functions. This is different from traditional fitness and rehab systems, which trains in isolation. Therefore, we focus specifically on standing, walking, running, and throwing.
3. Integration of Fascial Mechanics
FP places a heavy emphasis on the fascial system. This is a network of connective tissue that envelops muscles and organs, influencing movement and force transmission. By training the body to utilise the fascial system effectively, FP practitioners improve:
elasticity,
coordination,
and power
all while reducing strain on joints.
This approach results in smoother, more energy-efficient movement that is both powerful and injury-resistant.
4. Posture and Gait Correction
One of the key features of Functional Patterns is the focus on gait, the way we walk and run. By optimising gait mechanics, Functional Patterns helps clients avoid chronic pain associated with poor movement habits.
Gait training improves the alignment of the entire body, from the feet to the head. This holistic focus on gait is what distinguishes FP from traditional rehabilitation programs. These programs often overlook the importance of walking and running mechanics.
What Sets Functional Patterns Apart?
1. A Systems-Based Approach
At the core of FP is its systems-based approach to movement. Traditional training methods often isolate muscles or body parts, focusing on superficial strength gains or flexibility.
In contrast, Functional Patterns looks at the body as an interconnected system. This means that all muscles and joints must work together correctly to achieve balanced movement patterns. The primary focus is to align the body in a way that minimises the stress on joints and tissues. This directly prevents injury and improves performance.
Utilising a systems based approach also creates more symmetry. A-symmetry, as seen in conditions such as scoliosis, often arise from disconnected movement patterns. Correcting our primary human movements leads to better symmetry.
2. Movement Over Aesthetics
Many fitness systems focus primarily on aesthetics (e.g., bodybuilding, static stretching). This can create imbalances and compensations in the body.
Functional Patterns places functional movement above aesthetics. This method emphasises natural, efficient, and biomechanically sound movement patterns that translate directly into daily activities and sports. With FP, you train for efficiency and longevity rather than short-term cosmetic gains. This allows you to achieve relief from chronic pain and poor posture WHILE improving fitness.
3. Biomechanics-Driven
FP centres around biomechanics, the science of movement. By studying how forces act on the body, FP practitioners learn to move in ways that reduce wear and tear on joints and tissues. This helps you to reduce pain, improve range of motion, calm your central nervous system and feel more coordinated in physical activities.
The methodology integrates corrective exercises that address common postural deviations (e.g., forward head posture, pelvic misalignment) to bring the body into optimal alignment. The aim is not just to provide temporary relief. Rather, we achieve long-term movement efficiency that improves posture, gait, symmetry and overall well-being.
Why Functional Patterns Is the Best on the Market
1. Results-Driven
Functional Patterns has proven its effectiveness for a wide range of clients. We work with everyone from professional athletes to individuals suffering from chronic, persistent pain.
FP is based on the principle of Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands (SAID). This means that the body adapts to the demands placed on it.
By training the body to move more efficiently, clients do not just experience pain relief. They also improvements in athletic performance, mobility, and overall quality of life. Functional Patterns succeeds where other methods fail, particularly in cases of long-standing pain or dysfunction.
2. Avoidance of Harmful Movement Patterns
Many training methodologies fail to take into account the damage that can result from repetitive, harmful movements. Traditional strength training, for example, often leads to overuse injuries by reinforcing dysfunctional movement patterns.
FP avoids these pitfalls by focusing on natural, functional movement that reduces stress on the joints and tissues. This is especially important for individuals suffering from chronic conditions like back pain, shoulder issues, or hip problems.
How Functional Patterns Works
1. Assessment-Based Training
Each person is assessed holistically, taking into account their posture, gait, and movement patterns. This assessment reveals dysfunctions and compensations in the body—whether due to injury, poor training, or lifestyle habits (e.g., sitting for prolonged periods). FP practitioners use this information to create individualised training programs targeting the root causes of pain or dysfunction.
2. Corrective Exercises
FP exercises are designed to retrain the body’s natural movement patterns, emphasising rotational movements, dynamic stability, and posture correction. Rather than isolating muscles, these exercises encourage full-body coordination. Movements such as myofascial stretching, corrective exercises, and core activation drills are employed to restore balance and symmetry. Core integration is especially important, as FP recognises that a properly functioning core helps stabilise the spine and pelvis, reducing compensations elsewhere in the body.
3. Science-Based and Continually Evolving
FP is constantly evolving based on new research in biomechanics, movement science, and functional anatomy. The founder of FP, Naudi Aguilar, and his team consistently test and refine their methods to ensure that they are based on the latest scientific evidence. This commitment to research and development sets FP apart from other methodologies that rely on outdated or anecdotal practices.
4. Sustainable, Long-Term Solution
Unlike temporary fixes such as pain medications or short-term physical therapy, FP offers a sustainable, long-term solution. We address chronic pain and movement dysfunction at the root cause.
By addressing the deeper causes, Functional Patterns enables clients to enjoy long-lasting relief and enhanced movement. This makes it particularly appealing to individuals who are tired of the cycle of injury, pain, and rehabilitation. This cycle is common with traditional approaches.
Functional Patterns is not just another fitness trend. it is a scientifically backed, results-oriented methodology that addresses the root causes of dysfunction and pain.
Whether you are an athlete looking to improve performance or an individual suffering from chronic pain. FP offers a holistic solution that focuses on posture, gait, and biomechanics to create lasting change. The emphasis on natural movement patterns and long-term health makes this the best option for pain-free fitness.

What To Expect From Your Initial Consultation
-
Gait Cycle Analysis
At Burleigh Biomechanics, we start with the gait cycle as our primary diagnostic and assessment tool. Regardless of your fitness level, you’ll step onto the treadmill for your initial assessment.
Elite athletes, office workers, and those experiencing chronic pain can all benefit from having their gait analysed. If you're in too much pain to run, walking at a manageable pace will still reveal valuable information. We can learn about your movement patterns using any degree of movement you are capable of.
-
Postural Photos for Assessment & Progress Tracking
In addition to the gait assessment, we take detailed postural photos. These images provide insights into how dysfunctional movement has affected your standing posture. They also offer a visual benchmark to track your progress.
These “before” photos serve as a point of comparison for the improvements you’ll experience as you work with us.
-
Slow-Motion Gait Analysis
After recording your gait cycle, we analyse the footage in slow motion, comparing it with high-performing movers. This comparison allows us to pinpoint areas of dysfunction.
For example, you might be rotating more on one side than the other. Or, you may have a hip drop on one side because of a disengaged core. These observations allow us to understand which areas of your body are compensating. It emphasises where you need more balanced movement.
-
Customised Corrective Exercises
Based on the gait and posture analysis, we design customised exercises to target and improve your areas of dysfunction.
These exercises focus on building strength, improving symmetry, and rehydrating the connective tissue (fascia) throughout your body.
By improving overall connectivity and balance, these exercises address the root causes of your dysfunction. They do not just alleviate symptoms.
-
Customised Myo Fascial Release Protocol
Our customised myofascial release protocol is essential for targeting long-term adhesions that restrict tension distribution during corrective movements.
Unlike traditional stretching, which can destabilise joints, myofascial release improves tissue elasticity and pain relief without increasing instability. This approach helps you move more effectively, supporting your body’s ability to adapt to healthier movement patterns.
-
Holistic Lifestyle Discussion
Beyond movement, lifestyle factors like diet and stress management play a critical role in the healing process. We’ll discuss these aspects to identify any additional factors that might be contributing to your pain or dysfunction.
This method provides a clear roadmap to better movement and improved quality of life. We build it on the foundations of Functional Patterns’ unique and individualised approach. At Burleigh Biomechanics, we’re committed to guiding you through each step of this journey.
What To Expect From Your First Few Sessions Using The Functional Patterns Method
During your first 10 sessions or so, you will be learning new movements and techniques that will most likely feel completely foreign to you. We will be focusing greatly on ratios, coordination and muscle tension.
We heavily queue or instruct every movement you make. You will move slowly while your biomechanics specialist gives you specific adjustments to make.
These may include tilting, shifting and rotating to turn on the correct muscles. We want to ensure as much symmetry and safety as possible.
Once You Get The Hang Of Things
After about 10 sessions or so you’ll likely have a firm grasp on the concepts and an improved mind-body connection.
You’ll have a colourful repertoire of exercises and strategies under your belt.
You’ll be feeling more connected, coordinated and confident with your workouts and daily movements.
It will also be easier to respond to queues and you will have a better understanding of the terms we use to describe your body moving in space. At this point, momentum will take hold and things should be coming together.
You’ll eventually begin to notice changes in you health, posture, movement and pain.
Your Posture, Pain & Movement Result!
At Burleigh Biomechanics, results aren’t just possible—they’re expected. With consistent dedication to our process, you’ll see an impressive transformation that’s more than just “before and after” photos. Improved posture and chronic pain relief are just the beginning. Expect to see changes in muscle tone, body composition, mental clarity, stress management, and lifestyle choices as you progress.
Meaningful results can take time, usually between 3 months and 3 years depending on the severity. But time will pass anyway. In a few years, will you look back with gratitude for investing in lasting change, or will you wish you’d started sooner?
It’s your time to get an incredible result at Burleigh Biomechanics using the Functional Patterns Gold Coast method!
FAQs
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required depends on each individual's goals and condition. For chronic pain relief or postural correction, clients typically start seeing noticeable improvements after a few weeks (usually 6–8 sessions). However, achieving long-term results may take several months of consistent work. Athletes may also need ongoing sessions to continue refining their performance.
How many times per week should I attend FP sessions?
Most clients have between 1-2 sessions weekly. This is an adequate amount of sessions to make consistent and lasting progress. We will give you homework exercises and posture work to do between your sessions to further your progress. It can be beneficial to do 1-2 sessions a week for as long as you are able before potentially reducing the frequency.
How long is the initial appointment, and what does it include?
The initial appointment typically lasts 90 minutes. It includes a comprehensive assessment of posture, gait, movement mechanics, and lifestyle factors. This detailed evaluation helps identify any imbalances or dysfunctions that are contributing to pain or inefficiency. The goal is to tailor the program to your specific needs.
How long are subsequent appointments?
Follow-up sessions are usually 60 minutes long. These sessions focus on corrective exercises, movement retraining, and reassessing progress made since the last appointment. Each session builds on previous work to gradually restore proper movement patterns and relieve pain.
What kind of results can I expect, and how quickly?
Results vary based on each person's condition and commitment to the program. Clients typically start to feel improvements in posture, chronic pain and movement efficiency after 4–10 sessions. Factors such as structural/scoliosis changes, injury rehabilitation, and strength gains will require several months of consistent work.
Can Functional Patterns help with chronic pain?
Yes, Functional Patterns is highly effective in addressing chronic pain, including back pain, shoulder dysfunction, hip pain, and neck issues. The method focuses on correcting movement imbalances and dysfunctional patterns that contribute to these problems. The team at FP have changed my life! I had a hip injury 6 years ago which was debilitating. After exhausting all treatment options I was told that my only choice was surgery. Then I came across FP! Having worked with the team at FP... has changed my mind pain and mobility...without surgery!! I can walk and exercise without pain. The small classes are fantastic to work on your biomechanics at your own pace with individualised support but still have some laughs! I simply can’t recommend enough.
